President Mnangagwa hails economic gains under Second Republic

Zimbabwe continues to make steady progress towards Vision 2030, with President Emmerson Mnangagwa highlighting strong economic growth, agricultural transformation, and improved public sector capacity under the Second Republic.

Addressing the nation during the 45th National Heroes Day commemorations in Harare,  today, President Mnangagwa said the economy had significantly expanded despite external pressures such as illegal sanctions, climate change, and global market volatility.

“The national Gross Domestic Product is now pegged at US$45.7 billion, rising from US$16 billion in 2018. The current domestic demand growth is pleasing, while the projected 2025 economic growth of 6% is well within reach,” he said.

The President said the country’s economic resilience was reflected in its ability to support critical sectors of national development.

“The capacity of the national fiscus to resource key priority areas such as agriculture, health, education and social protection, as well as infrastructure rehabilitation and development, continues to be enhanced,” he globally.

He also emphasised that land reform remains central to the country’s development agenda, with the new land tenure system expected to unlock fresh opportunities for investment and productivity.

“The new land tenure system is going to revolutionise the agricultural sector through enabling farmers to invest in increased production.  As a result, transformational impacts are expected in the sector, with regards to access to financing, increased productivity, as well as mechanisation and on-farm infrastructure investments,” he said.

President Mnangagwa praised the hard work of Zimbabwean farmers and the country’s growing agricultural output across multiple crops and livestock.

“Zimbabwe’s success stories in maize, wheat and traditional grain production, record levels in tobacco production, along with the rebound growth of the national herd and increased milk production, are testament to the hard work and perseverance of our people,” he said.

“Our heroes would definitely be proud of the positive strides which our farmers are making. Tinokutendai varimi, nemhuri yose yeZimbabwe, nekuchengetedza nhaka yedu yakarwirwa nemagamba edu, vatiri kuyeuka zuva ranhasi,” he added.

On sustainable development and environmental stewardship, the President reiterated Zimbabwe’s commitment to inclusive and climate-smart development.

“The precepts of sustainable development enjoin us to judiciously exploit our resources, for the benefit of both present and future generations,” he said.

He concluded with a call for all citizens to take part in building the nation.

“The duty to achieve a thriving, industrialised and prosperous economy lies with all of us. Nyika inovakwa, inotongwa, inonamatigwa nevere vayo / ilizwe lakhiwa, libuswe, likhulekelwe ngabanikazi balo,” he said.

Looking ahead, President Mnangagwa stressed the importance of collective responsibility in driving national progress. He said sustainable growth, industrialisation, and improved livelihoods are key to honouring the legacy of the country’s heroes and ensuring a better future for generations to come.
