Minister Mavetera Certifies Digital Skills Graduates and Launches Rural WiFi in Hwedza South

Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Hon. Tatenda Mavetera, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to digital empowerment and rural connectivity through a major rollout of initiatives in Hwedza South.

In a statement shared on her official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Minister Mavetera announced the certification of 195 youth who completed digital skills training in Hwedza South under the Ministry’s DigiTruck program.

“As Minister of ICT, I certified 195 digital skills graduates in Hwedza South, and we again launched a free WiFi zone at St. Anne’s Goto School under the President Internet Scheme program implementation,” she posted.

The DigiTruck, a mobile digital classroom, is part of Zimbabwe’s broader efforts to bridge the digital divide by equipping rural communities with the tools needed to thrive in the digital economy. The newly launched WiFi hotspot at St. Anne’s Goto School is expected to boost access to online education and communication services for both students and the broader community.

“We have empowered youth with digital skills training using our DigiTruck,” said the Minister. “The WiFi hotspot will enhance education and access to connectivity in our rural areas.”

The event was also attended by Members of Parliament from Kenya, who were in Zimbabwe at the invitation of Minister of Youth Empowerment and Hwedza South MP, Hon. Tinoda Machakaire. The visiting delegation was given a tour of the Ministry’s rural connectivity initiatives.

In addition to the ICT activities, Minister Mavetera highlighted the graduation of 500 young people from a skills development program run by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment in partnership with the Tonganyika Trust.

“This was a great event,” she noted. “Happy Sunday.”

The weekend’s activities underscore the government’s drive to create inclusive access to digital tools and education, particularly for young people in underserved areas, as part of its broader national development strategy.
